GRADUATION REQUIREMENT
A cumulative grade point of 2.0 will be required for graduation from the university in all masters level degree programs and in all bachelor degree programs.

PROBATION AND DISMISSAL
PROBATION: A student whose cumulative grade point average falls below 2.0 or who receives “no credit” for six or more credit hours in a given trimester on academic probation does not have the option of choosing credit/ no credit grading and is not eligible for scholarship. Students who have attended colleges and universities that are not or who have marginal academic record maybe admitted on academic probation.

DISMISSAL: Students may be disqualified from continuance as a student for the following reasons:

  1. Two successive semesters of academic probation
  2. Three semester with grade point averages below 2.0 (not cumulative)
  3. Receiving a grade of “F” or “No credit” in 12 hours of course work in degree program.
  4. If in the dean’s opinion, the continued membership of a student in the community is prejudicial or potentially injurious either to the student or to the community the dean may after consultation with a faculty committee require the student to withdraw.

Students under academic dismissal may apply for reinstatement by the faculty by addressing a request to the Rector of the seminary and the professional studies committee. The professional studies committee has responsibility for administration of these and all other academic standards.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE AND WITHDRAWAL
Leave of Absence: A student who finds it necessary to leave the college for a time must apply to the professional studies committee, through the Dean’s office for a leave of absence. Leaves of absence will be the student’s request and at the committee’s discretion.

Students granted leaves of absence may return to the college at the end of their leave period without applying for re-admission. Failure to enroll for the semesters without first obtaining a leave of absence will be considered a withdrawal from the seminary, as described below.

Withdrawal: Students permanently withdrawing from the Eltheco must secure a withdrawal card from the dean’s office, and must have an interview with the dean or the director of admissions before leaving campus. In emergencies or in cases where this is impossible, the dean should be notified by persons authorized to act for the student.

Students who withdraw without obtaining a leave of absence and who wish to return to the seminary at a future date, will be required to apply for re-admission.

EXTENSIONS
While the seminary recognizes that extenuating circumstances may exist in specific cases, the normal policy is that all course work is due by the last day of the term. Procedures for receiving permission for academic extension are outlined in the student Handbook of El Theological university.

CURRICULUM
The curriculum is organized in three divisions: Biblical studies, Historical Theological studies and ministry studies. Each master of Divinity student also must participate in the supervised practice of ministry (SPM) courses.

SUPERVISED PRACTICE OF MINISTRY
Supervised Practice of Ministry (SPM) courses allow students to engage in the work of ministry and to reflect on that work with the assistance of a trained supervisor. SPM course serve four purposes:

  1. To help students develop and use effective models for ministry
  2. To equip students with useful tools for evaluating their effectiveness in ministry
  3. To enable students to integrate classical theological disciplines with the needs of the people they serve and
  4. To minister in areas of need.

Approved work of 13 – 25 hours per week in the practice of ministry in a field setting for the duration of an entire semester plus participation in a weekly supervision practicum at the seminary or approved full time work for 10 – 12 weeks of practice of ministry under supervision, usually taken and will ordinarily provide three semester hours of SPM credit.

INTERNSHIPS
El Theological university also offers an internship program  in which students engage in full time ministry for an entire year usually following their second year of theological study. Opportunities are available in churches, in clinical pastoral education, in educational institutions and other ministries. A full time intern is considered a full time studies.

A minimum of 12 credit hours is required in supervised practice of ministry (SPM) for M. Div. students. Students may take additional hours but only 12 credit hours may be counted towards graduation. The office maintains communication with churches of many denominations with church and community agencies in Nigeria and with potential placement organization in many parts of Africa. This provides the students with a wide range of opportunities for placement.

MASTER OF ARTS IN RELIGION (M.A.R)
REQUIREMENTS

Recognizing the need to equip men and women for lay and ordained specialized ministries in the church, the seminary has designed a Master of Arts in Religious program that has the flexibility to meet a variety of personal and professional goals. All students entering the program must hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent. The M.A.R degree requires a minimum of 50 hours of course credit in residence at the university. Students will design learning contract in consultation with their advisor shortly after being admitted to the program and ordinarily before the first semester. All M.A.R learning contracts will be reviewed by the M.A.R committee.

The 74 credit hours requires for the M.A.R can ordinarily be completed through one of the three options outlined below:

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT
In addition to the residency requirement listed above two consecutive semesters of residency with full time status are required. “Full time” is defined as 18 credit hours per semester.

MASTER OF DIVINITY (M. Div.)
DEGREE REQUIREMETNS

The course of study leading to the degree of master of Divinity includes the following requirements (totaling 96 hours)

  1. A minimum of 84 credit hours is requires from the three academic divisions of the curriculum.
  2. Area mastery in the Biblical Division will be presented by and will ordinarily be demonstrated by, the successful completion of the following courses:
  3. Biblical studies I, the Hebrew scriptures.
  4. Biblical studies II, the New testament.
  5. One exegetical course in the Hebrew scriptures.
  6. One exegetical course in the New testament.
  7. Area Mastery in the History Theology Division will be represented by and will ordinarily be demonstrated by the successful completion of the following courses:
  8. The Early and Medieval church.
  9. The Reformation and Modern church.
  10. History of Religions.
  11. Introduction to Christian Faith.
  12. The person and Work of Christ.
  13. Area Mastery in the Ministry Division will be represented by and will ordinarily be demonstrated by the successful completion of the following courses:
  14. Foundations of Christian Worship
  15. Foundations of preaching
  16. Foundations of personal care
  17. Foundations of Christian Education
  18. A course in policy

 

  1. A minimum of 12 credit hours is required in supervised practice of ministry (SPM).
  2. In addition to the residency requirements listed above, a Master of Divinity student must complete at least two classroom courses with El Theological University faculty members in each of the three divisions of the curriculum for a total of eighteen semester hours.

AREA OF MASTERY
The faculty has determined that persons who have a theological education should be expressed to have attained mastery over certain areas of basic theological content. Every student must therefore demonstrate such mastery in three areas of study: Bible, History and Theology. Additionally in the case of Master of Divinity students, the area of mastery is to successfully complete course work in the three divisions of the curriculum. The possible methods of demonstrating competence are described in the student handbook. A student also may propose alternative methods, such as passing examinations in a given subject, writing papers or successful completing courses with the same content in other schools. In such cases, the student may propose tot eh professional studies committee alternative methods of demonstrating competence. The decision of the committee and the dean will be final.

A record of the satisfaction of area mastery requirements will be kept in the office of the registrar and with the advisor of the students. This will be done either by

  1. The recording of a grade for the successful completion of the appropriate course work
  2. Or for a form signed by the appropriate faculty person and the dean.

BIBLICAL DIVISION
Mastery of the Biblical area of study constitutes knowledge of the Bible, the Hebrew scriptures and the New testament, to the end that a person is able to interpret the scripture for the church and the world and to be enriched in one’s own spiritual growth. The aims included in the successful completion of the courses in Bible included under the degree programs are:

  1. A basic mastery of the History of Biblical culture and literature
  2. A basic knowledge of the methods of interpretation, including the history of interpretation and use of the historical critical method.
  3. A demonstrated ability to do exegetical work
  4. A through knowledge of the meaning and message of the scriptures themselves.

HISTORY/THEOLOGY DIVISION
The Division of History/Theology offers courses intended to contribute to the effective practice of Christian ministry. the aims included in the successful completion of the courses in History/Theology listed under the degree programs are:

  1. To provide understanding of the basic themes and doctrines of the Christian faith from a historical, theological and global view point.
  2. To enable students rooted in Biblical faith and knowledge to think theologically.
  3. To enable them to use the historical and theological heritage of the Christian church to engage other person espousing different religions and secular beliefs in fruitful exchange and dialogue.
  4. To engage in sensitive and wise service of God and our fellow human beings. To do all this a student needs certain practical capacities: an accurate understanding of one’s own tradition; a sense of when statements need checking and where and how to go about checking them; a feeling for the need to decide, as well as for the appropriate basis and time for decision. Therefore, mastery will include the successful completion of basic courses, of specialized studies and individual research. Attention to case studies or specific historical or theological issues will give opportunity to practice integrating varieties of materials to develop competent answers to questions involving decisions.

MINISTRY DIVISION
Mastery in the ministry division is expected of Master of Divinity graduates. This includes a comprehension of the basic theoretical material underlying the practice of ministry, skills exercised in pastoral tasks and the integration of the theoretical, practical and spiritual in the life of the pastor. Area mastery at the seminary level will include the ability to grasp and articulate a pastoral theology. The claims included in the successful completion of the courses in the ministry listed under the degree programs are:

  1. To provide knowledge and experience of the worship and prayer of the people of God.
  2. To provide knowledge of and practice in the proclaiming and educating ministries of the church.
  3. To provide skills and capabilities in the evangelistic, pastoral care and governance dimensions of the church’s task.

The methods used to demonstrate mastery are designed to provide evidence that the students understand the skills required in the most common acts of ministry and that they reflected theologically on those acts of ministry to form a fundamental model of ministry.

FACULTY ADVISERS
Each student will be assigned to an adviser whose task will be to counsel with the student concerning programs of study, to reflect with the student about the adequacy of the student’s preparation of ministry to reflect with the student about the student’s career in seminary and in ministry and to give guidance in the student’s program of choices. Each faculty member has advisers, and has the option of gathering these advises as a group. Group meetings are often found to provide opportunity for students to test their perceptions of themselves and their progress in the seminary against the perceptions of their peers. The seminary will attempt to provide space for any group choosing this option, if requested to do so.

STUDENT CLASSIFICATION
Students in the M. Div. program are classified as follows: junior, middler, senior, unclassified and post graduate. A student is a middler who has completed 32 – 63 credit hours. A student is a senior who has completed at least 64 credit hours.

DOCTOR OF MINISTRY PROGRAM (D.MIN.)
The schools of Theology developed a joint ecumenical Doctor of ministry program. With the regalement of responsibilities within the schools themselves, the university assumed the institutional setting of D.Min and the program is available through EL THEOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY. The D.Min. offers men and women in the practice of ministry a program of professional and personal growth that leads to the granting of a Doctor of Ministry degree (D.Min.). Building on the student’s foundational studies for the practice of ministry and on the student’s experience in ministry, the program provides a means to develop further the attitudes, skills, knowledge and maturity that are essential for an advanced level of competency.

 

THE D.MIN. DESIGN
The D.Min is professional, theological and personal.
Professional : To qualify for admission, student shall be in fulltime ministry, commissioned or ordained for the ministry by the church, and shall have been in ministry for a minimum of six years. The student remains in ministry during the program to carry out an orderly observation of the theory of ministry while in practice.

THEOLOGICAL: The D.Min. Program enables the student to build a unified theological concept of ministry. participation is limited to persons who have received the Master of Divinity degree (M.Div.) or its equivalent. Integrative seminars challenge students to be international about the tasks of ministry and to identify a theology of ministry as vocation. Religious inquiry and theological reflection are rooted in the actual practice of ministry.

PERSONAL: At the center of each student’s program is the participation in an integrative seminar and the development of an individual learning contract. Both foster personal growth. The student’s specific program is based on the interests and needs of that participant and the student is the initiator of the design for that program.

THE D.MIN. CURRICULUM
A minimum of 36 semester hours shall be completed in the course of study. These credits divide into three groups:

  1. Min. core ………………………………………………… 24 hours

Major project/Disquisition…………………………… 12 hours
D.MIN CORE: The D.Min. core course consist of six semester hours completed in required D.Min weeks in residency and eight semester hours in integrative seminars.

GRADUATE COURSES: This offers graduate level courses for D.Min. students during its regular terms and especially during the summer. Approved study may also be completed at other theological schools and universities. Of the 18 hours of graduate courses, a minimum of four hours are ordinarily to be completed with faculty in regularly scheduled courses.

MAJOR PROJECT: The culmination of the program is the completion of a supervised major project that demonstrates the ability of the student to apply cumulative experience and theoretical knowledge to a specific concern in the ministry. The student presents a format written presentation of this project which is called a disquisition.

SCOPE: Three years is considered the normal minimum period of study, and six years is the normal maximum.

GENERAL INFORMATION

GRADING SYSTEM
The grading system for all courses is listed at the bottom of the one page course description given to students prior to registration.

  1. All required courses are graded with a letter grade only.
  2. All SPM and CPE courses are graded credit/no credit only
  3. The instructor may designate for all other courses whether the grading system will be letter grade or credit. The instructor may also opt to give the student his/her choice. Students on academic probation do not have the option of choosing credit/no credit grading.

In the system of letter grades, the following are the symbols used together with their respective grade point values:

   A       -           4.00
A­-      -           3.67
B+     -           3.33
B        -           3.00
B-      -           2.67
C+      -           2.33
C        -           2.00

An unclassified student is a person who falls into one or more of the following categories:

  1. Does not meet formal requirement for admission to a degree program, but is permitted to take courses for purpose of personal growth.
  2. Has not yet been admitted to a degree program and is permitted to begin studies before formal admission.
  3. Meets admission requirements but does not at this time wish to work toward a degree.
  4. Does not meet formal requirements for admission to a degree program, but at the request of an ordaining body, is permitted to carry out regular seminary work or a prescribed course of study determined by the ordaining body in consultation with the Dean of the college.
  5. All non-degree students must submit an “Application to Enroll for courses as an unclassified students” together with a non-refundable processing fee.

Unclassified students may take course either for credit or for audit. They may take up to twenty six hours per semester, nine hours in interim and or six hours during holidays. Students wishing to enroll for more than the above number of hours must have the written permission of the dean. Unclassified students who are permitted by the dean to carry a full academic load (twenty six hours or more) will be subject to the student fee.

SPECIALIZED SCHOOL FOR THE CLERICS

  1. THE SPECIALIZED SCHOOL FOR THE CLERICS

To equip the General Superintendents, Bishops, Missionaries, Freelancers and other groups of ministries in their specialized fields of operations. A new school has been established to make them effective and functional in their office.

Specialized training for the bishop, the stationed pastors, field evangelist, the missionaries and the freelance revivalist is a Bible school established to equip ministers with specialized fields and ministries.

There are specific and specialization one year training for specific ministers with specific positions, callings and specific functions which covered about twelve months for those who have already been trained theologically. One year program is for those who have specific ministries, offices and specific functions in the body of Christ. This specific training is for the Bishops, Stationed pastors, Field evangelists, missionaries and the freelance revivalists. The question may arise “who are these gospel ministers among the gospel ministers?

  1. THE BISHOP: This is a minister in charge of a denomination who had pioneered the course of the apostle. He is presently called the General Overseer, the General Superintendent or General coordinator of his church. Humanly speaking,  he is the founder of his church with many branches having many ministers under his leadership. This one year training for Bishops is for persons of this class and such persons are scripturally described as the Bishop; and these training calls for such categories of ministers.

 

  1. STATIONED PASTORS: The stationed is the minister in charge of a local church either employed by a Bishop or self employed to care for local church. He may either be a visioneer or a pioneer but with concentration to the local church; he may be called for local church or was conditioned by circumstances for local church ministries. He is a local pastor in charge of a congregation with members, boards, groups and many committees under his leadership.
  1. FIELD EVANGELIST: The field evangelist is a minister specifically called for soul winning, church planting and global evangelism. He is a called evangelist with a denominational base but without a local church as a pastor. He goes from one city to another and from one denomination to another, all with the zeal to share the gospel, to preach the gospel and to convert sinners for Christ.

 

  1. MISSIONARY: The missionary is a minister that was either sent by the Lord, by the church, by group of people by another person or by self to start, plant or support the gospel ministry in a foreign land, different culture, distant land, different race or in a different country or locality. He is a church planter, gatherer, flock keeper, visioneer, pioneer or founder of a new vision in a foreign land or different culture. Missionary is a minister of the gospel with a mandate to establish, builds, gather, plant or to sustain the gospel works in a foreign or distant area.
  1. FREELANCE REVIVALIST: The freelance revivalist is a gospel minister who is not working under any church or denomination. He carries visions and sponsors such vision according to his vision. He teaches, preaches and conducts crusades, revivals or seminars under the platform of non denomination. He is not employed by any Bishop or by any ministry. He has no specific church where he is a full time minister, still he is a genuine servant of God. He may belong to a denomination as a member or have a local church as his base still never a full time minister of these. He goes from one local church or the other conducting revival, soul winning seminars, crusades and other gospel activities. He receives invitations from churches to preach and to teach. He is not under any leader because he is not a full time service with any church. He is nothing but a “freelancer”.

 

WHAT IS THE SPECIALIZED TRAINING SCHOOL FOR THE CLERICS?
God did not call all ministers to do the same work but He called all to have the same aim and the same purpose for the same kingdom. There are many offices and different officers. He called some for apostolic works (Apostles), some for prophetic works (Prophet), some for evangelistic work (Evangelists), some for pastoral works (Pastors) and others for the tutorial works (teachers), while others were ordained as Bishops (General Overseers) still there are others who chose and were ordained to awaken, revive and strengthen the church (revivalist). These men need special training in order to do their jobs effectively and perfectly. Below are specialized schools for such class.

  1. SCHOOL OF SPECIALIZED MINISTRY

The school of specialized ministry is a special school in El Theological college built to equip and to train the Bishops, General Superintendents, appointed and elected church leaders to be functional, effective and diligent in their duties.

  1. EQUIPPING THE FIVE FOLD MINISTERS

This is a special school for the training, building, grooming and stabilizing the apostles, prophet, evangelists, pastors and teachers to be functional, effective and be stabilized in the areas of their calling. This training makes a called person to be specialized in this area of his or her calling.

There are special courses for those with special calling and special responsibilities in the business of the Lord. The very training lasts for one year only.
